Service honouring Calvin broadcast in Europe, Asia and US

More than two million television viewers in Europe and beyond joined a congregation of 1200 people at Geneva’s St Pierre cathedral to honour the 500th anniversary of the birth of the Protestant Reformer Jean Calvin, reports Ecumenical News International.

“We give thanks to God for the incredible ways that his legacy is giving life and hope to communities all around our world,” said the Rev. Clifton Kirkpatrick, president of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches, at the opening of the 31 May service.

PROMINENT CLERICS NOMINATED TO HEAD BREAKAWAY SOUTH AFRICAN PARTY

The former general secretary of the All Africa Conference of Churches, the Rev. Mvume Dandala, has been nominated as the presidential candidate of a breakaway faction of South Africa’s ruling African National Congress in the country’s 22 April elections, reports Ecumenical News International.

Professor Russel Botman, the rector of Stellenbosch University and the former president of the South African Council of Churches, pipped the former president of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches, the Rev. Allan Boesak, to the post as nominee for another top party position.
