For anyone reading this Blog it would come as no surprise to learn that a U.S. State Department report on religious freedom (2008 Report on International Religious Freedom) has exposed China as a nation that infringes on religious liberties. The Chinese government however has rejected the accusation (no surprises there).
“China is strongly dissatisfied and resolutely opposed to the U.S. accusation in its religious freedom report,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu said in a statement, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.
According to the Chinese government Christians are allowed to worship in government-backed denominations and according to its rules. Evangelism, missionary work and Christian education are all banned or discouraged. House Churches within China are often the target of raids and arrests.
It would seem to me that Jiang Yu and the Chinese government have no idea as to what religious freedom actually is!
The U.S. State Department report places China, Myanmar and North Korea on top of a list of countries with poor religious freedom records.
