Spong, if that is the man of the collar on the left of the video screen, says he feels embarrassed by the foundational documents of Judaism and Christianity based on some modern, western, culturally popular ethical standards he shares. Perhaps on this account, he resisted making any distinction between what the Bible says and, for example, various 19th century western practices with respect to slavery and the role of women.

    At root, though, any respect he may have for Jesus must be based on selective filtration of what the New Testament says of Jesus, who held a rather high opinion of the same OT that Spong openly despises. Thus Spong has implied that Jesus is NOT Lord, but at most Spong’s servant, one useful religious resource among others.
